What Is an Implantable Loop Recorder?

An implantable loop recorder (ILR) is a small device that is implanted just beneath the skin of the chest. It continuously monitors the electrical activity of the heart, recording any abnormal rhythms or episodes that may occur. The ILR is designed to capture data over an extended period, which allows our cardiologists and other physicians to analyze the recording and make accurate diagnoses.

What Are Implantable Loop Recorders Used For?

Implantable loop recorders are used to diagnose and monitor heart rhythm disorders, such as unexplained fainting episodes, intermittent palpitations, and suspected arrhythmias. They are especially helpful in cases where these symptoms occur infrequently and may not be captured during a short-term testing period or echocardiogram.

What To Expect From the Procedure

The procedure to implant an ILR is a relatively quick and straightforward outpatient procedure that can be performed by one of our cardiologists in Flint, MI. A local anesthetic is administered to numb the area and a small incision is made to create a pocket where the device is inserted. The ILR is then placed beneath the skin and the incision is closed with sutures. Patients are typically able to return home the same day with minimal discomfort.
